Maybe Not Becoming A Reef?

The SS United States may have a future other than being sunk to become a reef. In port only two days since being towed from Philadelphia to Mobile, discussions are already underway about offering low cost cruises on the ship to destinations truly unknown. Spokesman M. Pullen Urlegg says the change in plans for the shipโ€™s future will allow travelers to once again enjoy the thrill of a high sea adventure aboard a vessel steeped in American history. But there will be a few differences compared to voyages ocean travelers are accustomed to having, Urlegg says. To get aboard the ship, guests will have to grab a rung and climb the rope ladder dangling on the starboard side without falling into the water a few feet below. โ€œThat should help get their adrenaline pumping,โ€ he says. Passengers will need to supply their own chairs and cots for sleeping, along with linens, electricity, food and utensils, plus water for drinking and bathing. โ€œAnd they will need to provide propulsion,โ€ Urlegg says, noting that the shipโ€™s engines are inoperative with propellers missing. Without engine room control, the shipโ€™s duration at sea as well as final destination will be part of a fun guessing game that on board guests can enjoy as their entertainment. Calling it the slow boat to nowhere, โ€œitโ€™s a drifterโ€™s anything, anywhere is possible voyage,โ€ Urlegg says. โ€œA wise passenger will stock enough provisions for potentially years at sea under a variety of conditions.โ€ Urlegg suggests bringing fishing rods with bait and casting straight over the rails. โ€œWhat you catch may wind up being your sustenance,โ€ he says. โ€œAfter all, this ainโ€™t gonna be no Carnival cruise!โ€

  2. I was happy to hear of this possiblilty. My father was military and we returned from Germany in 1965 on the SS United States. It was awesome. It was so classy and beautiful. I am glad to hear it may not become a reef but back on the sea.
