โ€ข The first flag contained 13 red and white alternating stripes but was considered too similar to the British flag, prompting George Washington to begin the process of coming up with a new design. โ€ข While itโ€™s widely believed that Betsy Ross made the first American flag, flag scholars say there is no historical evidence to support this and that the flag evolved from various designs. Frances Hopkinson, a member of Congress and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, is said to have had a major role in designing the layout of the flag. โ€ข The Flag Code states that the Stars and Stripes should not be used as apparel, bedding or drapery. โ€ข Rugs and carpets showing the Stars and Stripes are barred by the Flag Code. โ€ข Adding any type of drawing, insignia or other markings to an American flag is strictly prohibited by the Flag Code. โ€ข Flag code etiquette says American flags should be illuminated either by sunlight or another source while on display.
