Foley’s Half Shell: A No Brainer
Colleen and I stop for a meal at Half Shell Oyster House in Foley last week. The location on US 98/W Laurel Ave (just west of Hwy 59) is an easy drive from Fairhope. Seems like ages since I enjoyed a dozen raw oysters on the half shell. After Meghan, our server, provides assurance that the current batch of oysters in house is really good, that’s my choice for an appetizer.
While I can recall the days when you could score a dozen raw for less than 10,HalfShell’sprice–19–is very much in line with what other places charge in this day and age. When the oysters show up, I have an immediate feeling that they will be good. Fresh and chilled on ice, they are large and, as it turns out, delicious. The Half Shell Salad topped with grilled chicken ($13) is Colleen’s entree choice, while I’m drawn to
the grilled Tuna Rigolets ($26.50), a temporary special featuring grilled tuna, green beans, rice and my choice of a side which is asparagus. Both entrees score an A+ for us. My tuna is absolutely wonderful (grilled exactly as I asked), while Colleen says her salad is outstanding.
This creates a challenging situation because we both agree we’d order the same items again. Yet, the menu is loaded with delicious options ranging from various fish to steaks, chicken, pasta and more. The atmosphere is pleasant, making this a great spot for anything from a date night to a meal with family, friends or guests visiting from out of area. If you prefer, small portion meals are also available. After food and service that are both excellent, our total without tip winds up at $64.90.
The place is open seven days a week. The menu on line gives a good view of how many choices you can pick from:

After our meal, there’s no discussion between us about whether we should come back. That answer is obvious. Half Shell Oyster House has too many options that seem to be calling out to us.
