Poseidon Over Fairhope

Poseidon over Mobile Bay AUG 24 2026

A US Navy Boeing P-8 Poseidon passes over Sacred Heart Chapel over Fairhope’s Battles Wharf community while conducting a training flight AUG 24 2026. Captured about 1,850 feet high, the aircraft moves at a ground speed of 174 knots or 200 mph while lining up to touch the runway at Brookley Field in Mobile, as part of touch-and-go landing practice.

Nicknamed submarine killers for their ability to detect and attack enemy submarines, the Navy uses Poseidons for long range patrol and reconnaissance as well as warfare. Designed using the same airframe as the Boeing 737 passenger jet, Poseidons are equipped with high resolution radar and internal bomb bays capable of dropping torpedoes, depth charges and anti-ship missiles. The Navy is reported to have more than 130 Poseidons in active service. The aircraft is used by military customers in at least nine other countries including Australia, the United Kingdom and Germany.
