Julwin’s Cajun Benedict

“Hey! Did you forget me?” I’m so hungry that my stomach is growling and calling me names. As Colleen and I walk into Juliwn’s for breakfast Wednesday, I know that calling in the big guns will be needed to satisfy my quest for food. The answer: Julwin’s Sampler, a mix of three eggs along with bacon, sausage and ham, plus pancakes with hashbrowns ($14.95). Colleen picks the Western Omelette ($13.95). The Sampler contains so much food that it has to be brought out on two plates. From perfectly cooked eggs to delicious pancakes and sausage, my breakfast is A+. Colleen loves her omelette (which is SOP from previous meals here). There’s so much food on my plate that I get Colleen’s agreement to provide assistance with the pancakes. While we’re working away on our breakfast, Emma, our server, refills our coffee and owner David Jewett stops by to say hello. Discussion turns to Julwin’s menu and Cajun Benedict ($14.95), a new item David added recently: Crawfish hollandaise, Conecuh sausage, onions and medium eggs over a split Julwin’s biscuit (if you know anything about Julwin’s biscuits, you already know why so many eastern shore residents come here for breakfast because people consider those biscuits ‘the bomb’). Sounds good, I tell David after hearing the description. I mention that I’ll have to give the dish a try some time. But there’s something we don’t realize.

‘Some time’ is about to hit right now. Moments later–as if there’s not enough food in front of us–an entree of Cajun Benedict shows up. Try it and see what you think, David tells us.

All I can think is, Holy gluttony, Batman! Our table looks like a food explosion.

Despite the big breakfast already served, we start work on the Cajun Benedict: What rating would I give this dish? A fun blend of flavors that’s very good. How can you go wrong when hollandaise with a Julwin’s biscuit is involved? Would I get this again? Yes. With more food in front of us than we can ‘shake a stick at’, there’s no way we can finish it all, so some of the Benedict goes into a box to be finished off later. I tell David that Julwin’s is going to have to offer roll-out services on stretchers because I may need to be carried out of the place. David says response to the Cajun Benedict is already good (he says one customer told him it beats anything he’s had in New Orleans).

Our total without tip lands at $39.51 if paid with cash. Like every visit we’ve made to Julwin’s before, we leave totally satisfied and absolutely as full as can be (even without the extra entree!). With Emma’s excellent service and the owner of the place checking on us, we’ve had another great visit to the oldest restaurant in Baldwin county. Hunger? That’s a distant memory. No snacks today; I won’t even think of food again until dinner (maybe)…
