Poseidon Over Fairhope
A US Navy Boeing P-8A Poseidon crew flies over Fairhope several times MAY 4th 2025 while practicing touch-and-go landings at Brookley Field in Mobile. Based out of Naval Air Station Jacksonville, the Poseidon is a maritime patrol aircraft used for anti-submarine warfare, intelligence and reconnaissance. Also available for search and rescue, Poseidons can drop and monitor sonobuoys to detect enemy submarines and can carry up to four Harpoon missiles plus anti-submarine torpedoes. Based on the Boeing 737 commercial jetliner, a fully equipped Poseidon costs around $175 million, according to the Navy’s budget. The Navy has received 119 Poseidons as of March and despite having a requirement for 138, is reported to have cut the number of new P-8As on order to a new total of 128 because of budget constraints.
