Edelweiss, a 750 foot by 105 foot bulk carrier sailing under the flag of Liberia, heads out of Mobile Bay APR 13 2025. Moving at 11 mph, the ship reports a draught of just under 45 feet as it begins a 46 day voyage to the Port of Mormugao on the west coast of India with arrival expected MAY 29th. Edelweiss’ voyage takes place as the world coal market undergoes significant changes. Retaliatory tariffs China has placed on U.S. coal is leading to a drop in coal exports from the U.S., while America is selling more coal to India. Already the largest destination for U.S. coal exports, India imported 9.5 million tons or about 29% of total U.S. coal shipments in 2024, with industry leaders predicting that the amount will rise. Energy industry analysts say trade tensions between the U.S. and China could wind up having a major impact on other countries that are major coal consumers. Increased competition, higher prices and even potential supply shortages are seen as possibilities, depending on how strongly the growing coal trade relationship between the U.S. and India becomes.
