MSC Vigo arrives in mobile
Enough aboard to leave you plastered for a very long time: MSC Vigo, an 887 foot by 131 foot container ship sailing under the flag of Germany, passes Gaillard Island on its way into the port of Mobile Sunday afternoon. With a draught of 32 feet, the ship moves at 12 mph while finishing a day’s trip from New Orleans. According to ship manifests, MSC Vigo carries around forty tons worth of Grey Goose vodka, about 64 tons of Absolut vodka, roughly six and a half tons of allyl chloride (a liquid primarily used in the manufacturing of pesticides), around 115 tons of peat moss in bales, about 20 tons of Ghana Cedrella (a tropical tree whose wood is used for making furniture, musical instruments and other items), about 52 tons worth of rig equipment containing lithium metal batteries, more than 550 tons of natural rubber and around 39 tons of an environmentally hazardous substance used in processing metals and in the petroleum industry.
