Working Waterfront Update

Workers spend the second day of July putting finishing touches on the fountain and parking areas at Fairhope’s pier park as preparations continue for Friday’s celebration of Independence Day. The chain link fences that have been a part of the park setting for the past ten months come down Thursday. Crews spend the day adding sod to an area between the fountain circle and North Beach park. A new patio and grassy area has been added in front of the Firemen’s Hall along with a sidewalk. A few small sections of sidewalk still need to be finished (a delivery of needed materials was missed, but project leaders say those will be taken care of soon.) No more having to stand if the handful of benches that were on the water’s edge are occupied; lots of bench rail is now in place for park visitors to sit and enjoy the view of Mobile Bay. New benches have also been installed on the pier. Two new water fountains have been added, and both have watering stations for pets.

After the Fourth of July, only South Beach park will remain closed. Visitors to the park will see a long stretch of fence extending along the southern edge of the park’s main circle to help delineate construction underway at South Beach. Workers will install a switchback with ramps for disabled park visitors along with a network of new walking paths and lighting. Work at South Beach park and the new restrooms is expected to be finished in
September.
