Goodyear Blimp Over Mobile Bay
Wingfoot Two, a 246 foot long by 52 foot wide airship operated by Goodyear, passes over Mobile Bay at midday SEP 10 2025. Captured around 2,300 feet up, the ship heads east at a ground speed of 41 knots or 47 mph. Capable of carrying up to twelve people, Wingfoot Two, powered by three 200 horsepower four cylinder engines, has a top speed of 70 mph.
Although commonly referred to as a blimp, Wingfoot Two has a rigid internal frame, thus making it more correctly referred to as an semi-rigid airship or zeppelin. By comparison, blimps are actually non-rigid airships, meaning that they lack any internal structure.
Goodyear built hundreds of blimps, mostly for the US Navy, during the 1900s. One such blimp measured more than 400 feet in length.
Based in Pompano Beach, FL, Wingfoot Two is one of three semi-rigid airships in operation in the US. Wingfoot One and Wingfoot Three are based near Akron, OH, and Los Angeles, CA, respectively. Goodyear’s airships are filled with helium, which is maintained at low pressure.
A SEP 20th appearance at college football’s Florida/Miami game at Miami Gardens is next on Wingfoot Two’s schedule, followed by Alabama’s game against Georgia in Athens SEP 27th.
