Fighter Jets Over Fairhope

Classic Jet Aircraft Association

Don’t be surprised to hear the roar of fighter jets and see unusual aircraft overhead around the eastern shore this weekend. Members of the Classic Jet Aircraft Association are holding their annual “Fly-in” gathering through Sunday. Not a public airshow, but just a convening of aviation enthusiasts who enjoy preserving and flying vintage fighter aircraft. Pictured is a Russian Mig-15 accompanied by two other fighter jets passing over Point Clear Saturday afternoon. The Mig was originally intended to intercept and shoot down American bombers including the B-29. While they had various limitations, Migs were nonetheless formidable aircraft and were often hard to shoot down, requiring multiple hits by enemy aircraft.  Introduced in 1949, more than 13,000 Migs are believed to have been produced. The group’s members next meet during the SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Expo starting APR 1st in Lakeland, FL. Photos shot from Fairhope, roughly three miles away…
