Fairhope Mayor James P Nix
Recognizing the man credited with making Fairhope “a magical little place”: If you look for one person whom many agree has done more to give Fairhope its modern day charm and beauty, James P. Nix is the almost unanimous choice. Nix, who served as Mayor of Fairhope for 28 years beginning in 1972, signs copies of his newly released book at Gambino’s Wednesday afternoon. Titled ‘Building Dreams – The Legacy of Fairhope’s Visionary Mayor,’ the book includes colorful tidbits about Nix’s time as mayor and projects he started, the effects of which are still evident today, including the fountain and rose garden at the pier park and flower beds throughout the city. The city’s beauty inspires author Fannie Flagg to call Fairhope “a magical little place.” Many residents are probably unaware of an early plan by the state of Alabama to make what is currently S Mobile St into a high traffic four lane roadway. Wanting to preserve Fairhope’s charm, Nix successfully fought against the plan, pushing instead for Greeno Rd to become the area’s major north/south thoroughfare. After Nix was first elected to office, the owner of The Grand Hotel tried to give him a five thousand dollar check as a campaign contribution. Nix said he had already won the election, wouldn’t accept any contributions and gave the check back. Fairhope author John Woods helped Nix with writing the book.
