Fairhope Hosts Air Race Classic
Fairhope was to have marked this morning’s start of the annual women’s Air Race Classic, but thunderstorms have other ideas. The race features pilots ranging from teenagers to seniors, from all vocations and backgrounds, with one common bond: A love of aviation. Forty one airplanes are involved in the event which consists of a timed race that was to have started in Fairhope with a finish in Spokane, WA. Two pilots are aboard each aircraft. Starkville, MS, was to have been the first stop, but the pilots were told to move ahead (off the race clock) to Harrison, AR, where it’s hoped the competition can begin. At their discretion, some pilots began leaving this morning. The Air Race Classic is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting aviation and career opportunities for women. Despite the race’s start being fouled by weather, participants were able to spend a few days getting to experience what Fairhope has to offer…
