APL Danube, a 984 foot by 158 foot container ship sailing under the flag of Malta and configured to carry major hazard cargo, passes Gaillard Island on the way into the port of Mobile the morning of JUL 14 2025. With a draught of 41 feet (distance from water level to bottom of hull), the ship moves at 12 mph while finishing a two day voyage from Houston. According to ship manifests, APL Danube carries about 58 tons of automotive batteries, nearly 75 tons of lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (a material used in lithium-ion batteries), around eleven tons of calendars, roughly 122 tons of Samsung air conditioners plus espresso makers, laundry storage hampers, rain suits, toys, fishing sunglasses, shoe racks, bolts and stone products.
