Black’s Cafe goes healthy
After all the sweets, cookies, pies and other unhealthy food over the holidays, the cute chef at Black’s says it’s time to take meals in a new direction and uses the start of 2025 to do it. Just in time for the Arctic cold blast, it’s ginger/tumeric soup. Served hot (just like the chef), this is a mix of coconut milk with chicken, kale, ginger, turmeric, mushrooms and fresh lemon juice. Carrots, onion, celery and salt and pepper are also in the mix.
With turmeric and ginger known for helping fight inflammation and improving blood flow, this soup ranks high on the healthy scale (and it’s low on carbohydrates). Taste-wise, it’s different and takes a little getting used to (the flavor is vaguely reminiscent of some Indian dishes).
After putting all this together, the chef isn’t sure if tonight’s meal will get a thumbs up or thumbs down. But when the big question is popped–”So, is this a keeper?”–the chef is told: It passes! With all the ingredients thrown in, it’s a hearty soup with every spoonful offering something different. Soup crackers, it turns out, are a good addition. The chef really likes this dish, too. Discussion already turns to minor tweaks the next time this soup is served–like maybe serving with pita bread…
